Former world chess champion Vladimir Kramnik once said “I am convinced, the way one plays chess always reflects the player’s personality. If something defines his character, then it will also define his way of playing.”
At Raffles Chess Club, we don’t think of chess as just a game, but also as an art with many nuances and complexities that are waiting to be discovered. Regardless of a player’s skill level, chess has something to offer, be it an opportunity to forge new friendships with fellow members, or the thrill of being engaged in an exciting battle of strategy and wits. With our primary focus being enjoying the game, the chess club is open to anyone who wishes to put their minds to the test.
Training sessions are held every Wednesday from 2.30pm to 4.30pm. While we have different groups for Chinese and International Chess, members are not limited to playing only one kind of chess and are more than welcome to try out the other if they wish. It is common for our members to discuss different chess positions with one another, each offering their own unique analysis and insights, contributing to our overall appreciation and understanding of this incredible game. We strive to create a conducive, judgement-free environment that everyone, regardless of their chess ability, can be a part of.
Our members participate in many tournaments throughout the year, especially during the March and September holidays, when the National School Individuals Chess Championships and the National School Teams Chess Championships are organised. We have an excellent track record, with our members having placed 1st runner-up and 1st place respectively last year.
Additionally, we organise our own Raffles Cup for Chinese Chess as well as the Raffles Chess Championship for International chess, both of which are held in May. Many secondary and tertiary institutions participate in these championships. Members thus have multiple opportunities to play in different competitions and experience competitive chess firsthand, with the fees for the above competitions being paid for by the school.
Has chess always been something you have wanted to pursue? Or are you an experienced player looking to further develop your skills? If so, we urge you to consider joining our chess club. The immense enjoyment and invaluable lessons that you will gain from your time here in the chess club will surely leave a positive impact on you!
